We had our second meeting with staff today. Prior to the meeting, we learned that Norma's brace goes on her foot before the shoe, the don't go on as a unit!
Norma is progressing in all areas, Yea!!
She needs to go for walks (strolls in the wheel chair) and be encouraged to view things on her right side as it will help her to center herself. There is lots of great art work through out the hospital that I am sure she would enjoy viewing.
We are encouraged to assist her with verbal skills. Imitation (repeating what you said) and oral reading is good. Enunciate clearly so that she can watch your lips as you pronounce words.
Picture/word association is another area to assist with as well as giving her choices..Is this an apple or banana...This is a water bottle, this is a book, what is this----- I hope you get the idea. The more practice she gets at these skills, the quicker her progress. Her speech therapist is wonderful...
If it is a nice day, take her out to the patio by the cafeteria. A nurse will help you get her into the wheel chair.
Kim & Brett, welcome to Ann Arbor.

Thank you for the welcome, Karen. We were delighted to see Norma tonight and see the wonderful progress she has made. We asked her if she would like us to take her outside tomorrow and she indicated that she would like it very much. We will keep your other suggestions in mind as we visit this week. It is so nice to see all of the support and love she is receiving through cards, flowers, visits and calls. We know that she is on her way to a complete recovery. Go Norma!! We love you so much.

Hi Colleen,
ReplyDeleteWe are leaving to go home in the early afternoon on Tuesday. It would be great to see you. Norma did have Jim give me your number, but I wasn't sure if she wanted me to call you or just have it in case I needed it. I think we will be visiting Norma again tomorrow afternoon before we get together with Jim and Kevin and his family for dinner at 6:00. We will visit again on Monday evening. I will be meeting some friends for brunch tomorrow. I will try to call you sometime tomorrow.
It has been so wonderful to spend time with Norma. I know she and Jim have been very appreciative of your visits.
Love,
Kim

Maria her nurse told us that they had her standing!!!! They also said that there is good progress in her right leg! Yippee!!!! Hope everyone is doing well! Bye for now, Janet and Paul

Wow! Let me tell you all what we saw last night! Remember that right leg of Norma's that 3-4 weeks ago would not move? Well yesterday Paul and I saw her lift it WAY UP IN THE AIR!!! She did it several times! She told us too that with support they have her walking in P.T. I haven't seen it yet, but oh my gosh! Chris, I know that you are coming home soon and you will see a big difference in your Mom. She is working very hard and it is paying off. She told us too that her right hand and arm have a tingling sensation in them. That's a good thing! I saw Colleen last week with Norma and she does such a great job with Norma! She made her up some picture and word pages and is recording the words for Norma to imitate. There are so many wonderful people that are supporting Norma/family and friends. Okay, bye for now, Janet
ReplyDeleteWOO HOO ~ let's hear it for legs way up in the air!! And WALKING with support and wonderful friends and family supporting you in every step of this journey!! I just know you are going to have a full recovery, Norma. Not a day goes by that we aren't thinking of you and praying for you here in NC. Keep up the good work as it is paying off slowly but SURELY!!!
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to talk to Jim yesterday and hear that you were able to go out to lunch in Ann Arbor. That must have been a nice outing for all of you.
We love you,
Kimmie, Brett, Mike & Jer
Hi Kim! Thanks for telling us that Norma went out to lunch in Ann Arbor. That's exciting and I did not know that! It helps to hear from everyone to stay on top of things. I will be out of town from Sept. 9-29. I am hoping that I will have access at some point to a computer and would truly appreciate any updates while I am gone! I am already looking forward to coming home and seeing more recovery. Thank you to everyone for sharing. Bye for now, Janet
ReplyDeleteNorma & Colleen...you are BOTH so amazing!! It's only 3 days, now, until I see you Norm-ee! Can you access your blog/a computer from the hospital? (just a question). Colleen, I hope I meet you while I'm visiting! I'm bringing the Angel Cards (words), magnetic Healing Words, NO grass skirts (this trip, hee-hee!) & music...where did you have lunch in A2, by the way...could you go to Jim Schulz's 60.5 B'day party w/me? It's 2-6 on Sat. afternoon. I really want you to meet him, since he's recovered from two strokes...speech therapy & everything. But, if you're not ready for that much visiting, perhaps he'll come to see you. I just want you too see all that IS POSSIBLE, GF!! You will get it ALL BACK!!! You've come so far, already, and everyone is amazed and proud of your hard work and progress!! I just can't wait to tell you face-to-face what a SHE-RO you are, Normee Susee!! See you soon!! XOXOXO Suzee ;D
