Jim got a call at 8am for the hospital, Norma needed to have surgery to relieve the pressure from the swelling of her brain. Surgery was scheduled for 1pm. Dr. Buckingham told us that the CAT scan from Saturday showed significant swelling of her brain, and it was only the third day. Normally the swelling peaks on the 7th. Sounded like this was the right thing to do. The surgery is called Decompressive Craniectomy and lasts a little over an hour. A piece of the skull is removed to provide space for brain expansion. This reduces the change of brain damage. The piece of skull is put under the skin in the abdomen to keep it viable for the 1-3 months until it is replaced.
Surgery went well. We got to see her in recovery a couple of hours after the surgery was over. She was out of it, as she should be. Jim and I left then as they wanted to keep her quiet with no stimulation so that they would not need meds to keep her blood pressure steady.
Sweet dreams Norma.
